Every creative industry seems to carry around the same myth: a solitary genius disappears into their studio and emerges hours later holding the perfect idea. We love this image because it suggests creativity arrives in sudden flashes of personal brilliance.
In practice, the work rarely unfolds that way.
Most of the ideas that have stayed with me over the course of my career didn’t appear fully formed or arrive in artistic isolation. They tended to take shape in conversation, often in the middle of messy exchanges where someone pushed back on an assumption or noticed something the rest of the room missed. Those moments of shared thinking, where tension and curiosity exist in the same space, tend to reveal the real contours of a problem. Once that happens, the solution often begins to emerge from several directions at once.
Which is why I’ve come to describe my role as Creative Director a little differently than people might expect. I certainly help shape direction and review the work that leaves the building, yet my deeper responsibility is designing the conditions where strong ideas can happen repeatedly. Creativity may look spontaneous from the outside, but the environment surrounding it can be thoughtfully built.
Our World is a Little Strange, and That’s Exactly Why It Works.
At CSG, our work rarely moves in a straight line. One brief may involve helping a healthcare organization translate regulatory complexity into language people actually understand. The next project might be to help a technology company explain a product that hasn’t entered the public imagination yet. Some days the challenge is strategic, other days emotional, and often it’s both at once. Problems are rarely visual or verbal alone: they’re behavioral. And every brief becomes a different kind of puzzle.
Because of that complexity, rigid structures rarely serve us well. That’s why we rotate writers and designers into different partnerships. When the same two people collaborate exclusively, they naturally develop shortcuts and rhythms that make the process efficient. Efficiency has its place, but over time it can narrow the range of questions people ask and the directions they’re willing to explore. The work becomes smoother while the thinking becomes more predictable.
On the other hand, new pairings introduce slightly different ways of interpreting a problem, which changes the tone of the conversation from the very beginning. Someone might challenge a premise that previously went unquestioned, or approach a solution from an entirely different angle. That small shift in perspective often opens doors the team didn’t even realize were there.
Where Ideas Actually Come From
Variety introduces perspective, and perspective tends to strengthen ideas. This process begins during concepting, which remains the stage of the work I care about most — it’s where everything begins. At CSG, we start with the idea, not with channels or deliverables, formats or execution. And here’s what I’ve learned: we need creative tension in that process.
Different disciplines approach problems in different ways, but when people remain curious about one another’s reasoning, those disagreements sharpen an idea rather than weaken it. Creative tension, I like to remind the team, is a feature, not a flaw.
Our early conversations are intentionally exploratory. Writers and designers think together from the start rather than passing the work from one discipline to another. Writers bring narrative and psychology while designers bring clarity and emotional tone. Ideas are examined from several angles at once and strengthened long before execution begins.
Underneath that collaborative dynamic sits another principle that shapes our work: behavior design. When we evaluate a concept, we spend less time asking what a piece of messaging should say and more time thinking about what people might do after encountering it. Understanding motivations, barriers and emotional triggers helps us design for real human decisions. The work begins to move beyond aesthetics because the idea has been anchored in the way people actually behave.
Again, writers contribute insights into persuasion and narrative while designers shape the experience surrounding those stories. Together, they begin designing behavior.
The Slightly Chaotic Magic of Creative Chemistry
Rotating partnerships reinforce our creative approach in ways that become clearer over time. As individuals collaborate with different partners, they develop a deeper understanding of how others think and solve problems. Designers start to see how narrative shapes impact while writers gain a sharper appreciation for visual clarity. Those exchanges help to build empathy across disciplines and encourage people to expand their own creative range.
Which brings me to something I care about deeply as a creative leader. We’re champions of careers, not just roles. Producing strong work for clients will always matter, yet the larger goal is building creatives. That means encouraging people to discover their voice, develop confidence and stretch into ways of thinking beyond their current comfort zone. Rotating partnerships accelerate that growth because every collaboration introduces a new perspective and a new set of instincts to learn from.
The values guiding our system are fairly simple. Curiosity matters more than certainty, adaptability matters more than rigidity and collaboration matters more than ego. When those values shape the environment, conversations deepen and ideas evolve more freely because people are genuinely interested in building on one another’s thinking.
Clients generally experience the results of our process as clarity. They never see the rotating partnerships or hear the early concept discussions, yet they can feel the difference in the work that arrives. Ideas feel fresher because they’ve been examined from several perspectives. Strategy carries weight because it’s grounded in real human behavior rather than surface messaging. Over time our client partnerships deepen because the work continues to evolve alongside the client’s challenges.
The mythology of the lone genius still lingers in our industry, but the reality of creative work is far more collaborative and more interesting. The ideas that endure rarely arrive in isolation. They emerge from environments where people are encouraged to stretch beyond the familiar. When those conditions are designed intentionally, creativity stops feeling like a mysterious event and begins to resemble something much more powerful: it’s a shared practice that grows stronger every time the team gathers to solve a problem together.
